House Plants

Did you know the many benefits of house plants? As a landscaper I love nature and I like to keep as much of it inside as I can. It helps keep my spirits up particularly in the winter.

House plants help to purify the air, increase oxygen, raise the humidity, and absorb toxins. They help to boost your mood and reduce stress. Let's take a look at some of the more popular house plants.

A very common, and often misunderstood indoor plant is Lucky bamboo. Lucky bamboo as it turns out is not actually bamboo at all, though it looks very similar. It is actually closer related to lilies and garden asparagus. It's a nice looking plant and very easy to care for. It can survive in wet soil, or in a bottle or jar with distilled water. All it needs is indirect sunlight, so keep it around the house such as on your desk or table. However, it is toxic to animals if eaten, so it should be kept away from mischievous pets.

The Snake plant, also referred to as Mother in laws tounge. (Lol) Is a very hardy plant. It can range in size from 6in to 8ft tall! This plant is a good air purifier and requires low light, so it is great to keep in the bedroom or bathroom. Keep the soil loose and ensure that it has dried completely in between waterings. This plant is also toxic if ingested. Most animals will leave it alone, But it's best to keep away from pets.

A popular hanging plant is The Spider plant. Spider plant requires indirect light and well drained soil. They are easy to get new starts off of and they are aesthetically pleasing. Great for hanging in your kitchen or living room.

Rubber trees are Hardy but can be very large house plants. They are great if you have a lot of room, and can bring a lot of life into your living space. They require indirect light and moist soil. Again most animals will leave them alone, But they are not good to be eaten so keep an eye on pets and young children.

Bonsai trees, well that's a whole other topic. Maybe I will write a post about them in the near future. There are many different varieties, They are a neat talking piece and fun to take care of. Some varieties require more attention than others. so if you were going to choose one, make sure to pick one that works best with your lifestyle.
